“Our culture is so fixated on dying and going to heaven when the whole Scripture is about heaven coming to earth.” N. T. Wright

Growing up, I would seldom consider what the gospel actually meant for my earthly life. I always focused on the gospel as being the “good news'“ of getting to go to heaven when my time here was done.

Now, please don’t get me wrong. I still think that’s some really good news! I still believe that the ultimate reward for all who trust in Jesus and his redeeming work on the cross is to one day live with him forever in heaven. Heaven is a perfect place that is far greater and more wonderful than anything this world has to offer.

But when I started intentionally seeking and listening to God, I began hearing the full gospel message and I realized what I’d been missing out on for way too long. I began learning that the gospel doesn’t just encourage us to live the kind of life where we simply take up space or barely get by while we are waiting to go “up” to heaven one day.

The gospel also gives us the power to bring heaven “down” here right now! (Matthew 6:10)
